It is world’s cup fever: FIFA world cup 2018 in Russia!!! And we dont want to miss anything right?
That is where Power BI comes to the rescue 🙂
I am going to build a Power BI file to follow the world cup and I decided to show you how I create it while creating it 🙂
In the first video, I downloaded in Power Bi the world cup data from FIFA world cup 2018 website and cleaned it to know when the matches occur, the groups and the flags.
In the second part, we built the first tab on matches:
1. When is my favourite group playing?
2. When is my country playing?
3. Which matches will be sent today and at what time?
In the third part, I will show you how to adjust the match times for your local time and some other improvements.
In part 4, I show you how to work with inactive relationships using DAX.
And in Part 5 video, I will show you how to download and visualize the knockout phases in Power BI.
You can download the Power BI file here:

I have no words such great video
Can you please copy paste the formula for Custom.1
Hi Ruth ! I am not able to see operators in Conditional Column like "contains". I can see only "equals" and "does not equal"….Can you help me ? Version: 2.59.5135.781 64-bit (junho de 2018). PS.: I did the same way inserting the command in formula…..= Table.AddColumn(#"Added Index", "Custom", each if Text.Contains([Column1], "Group") then [Column1] else null)
Great video. Plenty of PBI tricks!!! Thanks a lot.
Thank you
😮 wow amezing 💐😘
Hi Ruth. . Thanks for amazing video on FIFA. It would be good if you can show how you have downloaded the data to excel. I am unable to download it properly.
Parabéns pelos Ótimos videos sobre Power Bi – Sucesso
Brilliant Ruth!
on 15:20 the filter expression writes out as MP = 0 meaning that on 14th Russia and Saudi Arabia will be filtered out :s
Thank you!
Didn't expect to find such a useful info on data transformation in FIFA video =D
Hi Ruth,
Still can not understand the Custom.1 column creation. "try" is clear as Daniel already explained on PQ Challenge 3 but really hard for me understand how works the rest of the formula.
Any suggestion for deep understanding?
As always, thank so much.
Hi could you please explain custom 1 formula syntax " means criteria of condition"
Great stuff Ruth. Thanks for sharing.
Rather than all that data cleansing, which is very useful to know, I found a link on goal dot com which has much cleaner tables to link to/scrape:
http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/world-cup-2018-fixtures-draw-tickets-guide-finals-russia/yqqdomah5xys19yhtw931m98t
Hope this helps…
In minute 14, you load and append groups A-H , I think it better (cleaner for sure :-)) :
1 – load only one group (A for example)
2 – delete the last 2 step (keep only source )
3 – filter the document caption
4 – expand data
5 – regular cleaning
Please tell me what you think .
Thanks again and again 🙂
Awesome!!!
Muy interesante… Gracias Ruth !!!
Thanks for the great topic and video.
Can you please explain how you get the excel file with the URL? when I press view source on my browser I get very very long code
